New Developments at Devils@Cradle, Cradle Mountain, 21 July 2007

We would like to take the opportunity to bring you up to date with our conservation programs and exciting new developments that have been recently undertaken at the devils @ cradle wildlife facility.

The new developments that have been implemented are to cater for the expanding number of animals now housed at the facility and to provide a greater viewing experience for our visitors. The recent breeding season has been a successful one at this stage, with 9 pouch young being carried between 3 young females. Three new glass viewing enclosures are being constructed to allow these females isolation to raise their young. While the recent construction of an additional new enclosure to house five young (13 months) orphan devils recently obtained from the South East of the state through the DPIW carer program has bought great breeding diversity to our current population. Our devil population has quickly grown from the initial 6 devils to 20 over the last 18 months.
The planned introduction of Eastern and Spotted-tail quoll in the spring has seen the development of new enclosures to house these species also.

The Devils of the Alpine field monitoring program (FMP) has now been operating for 12 months on a regular basis providing some interesting and valuable information. Interestingly we have only captured 4 positive DFTD devils on camera out of a total of approx 65 individuals from over 2000 high definition photographs indicating approximately 95% of the wild devils in the Cradle Mountain area are disease free which is great news. Longer term monitoring will concentrate on any increase in the amount of DFTD animals and drops in overall numbers. Detailed information on the FMP results is available on our website.

Walking tracks are also being constructed to provide access to these new enclosures and to the FMP camera sites situated on the property. This year we will be offering a new research based FMP tour as an “add on” to the 8:30pm After Dark feeding tour which will allow us to educate people on DFTD and the importance of research and conservation in a hands on manner.

The Devils of the Alpine Foundation has recently been created to contribute donation and sponsorship funds towards these important conservation programs.

These are exciting times for our new facility and we extend our invitation for you to visit and familiarise yourselves with our operation and explore the mysterious world of the Tasmanian devil.
